What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of brain wave training. It measures the electrical brain wave activity that is a byproduct of the brain’s communication system and then feeds information about those facts of functioning back to the person through the sensory system (sight and sound). In essence, the brain receives a mirror image of itself through the feedback. This information is ongoing and the brain adjusts what it does (healing), in response to itself, moment by moment.

It teaches the brain specifically about patterns of electrical activity that are inefficient. Inefficiency can look like a hyper/ over aroused brain or a very shut down brain.

A hyper aroused brain may:  have difficulty calming down, experience over responsiveness to threat, difficulty falling asleep and difficulty focusing.

A low aroused brain may: have difficulty waking up, feel unmotivated, have poor memory, and trouble focusing.

How is it beneficial?

With greater efficiency, people report:  more clarity in their thinking, more awareness of self and others, better sleep, better responses to pain and anxiety, more thoughtfulness, more ability to tolerate the discomfort of change, less emotional reactivity and less pain.

When we give the brain what it works with best – information - the brain re-organizes itself and symptoms drop away - physical and emotional!

The training allows us to interrupt emotionally based patterns of reactivity that start deep in the brain faster than we are consciously aware of them.  The training works faster than talk alone.

Who benefits from neurofeedback training?

Anyone who wants to improve how they respond to challenges in their life. Those challenges may be acute crisis, acute or chronic physical or emotional illness, anxiety, depression, ADHD and other executive functioning difficulties, and peak performers.  The reason that it is beneficial to everyone is that the neurofeedback assists the brain to be more efficient no matter what the content challenge may be.

Help with Specific Cognitive, Emotional, or Physical Challenges

A recent research conference in Palm Springs, California documented positive outcomes when neurofeedback training was utilized to address a plethora of difficult issues arising from ADD, ADHD, PTSD disorder.  A recent Norwegian study found neurofeedback training to be just as effective as medication for treating children with ADHD.  Additionally, neurofeedback offers help for depression, and can dramatically reduce anxiety.  Research has also show neurofeedback to be effective for, Alzheimers disease, autism, sleep disorders, insomnia and cognitive dysfunction from chemo-therapy.

The communication between the brain and the computer is not at a conscious level, which makes it uniquely suited to helping children with ADHD, Asperger's, and Autism.

Enhance Academic Performance

Neurofeedback is a phenomenal learning tool. It helps with focus, engagement and significantly increases one’s attention span.  Students of all ages can learn more quickly and effectively. They retain more of what they read and study. Teachers and parents often notice positive changes in performance and behavior after just a few sessions. Neurofeedback can even have a positive impact on your IQ.
